As fall is close approaching, our hearts linger in the thought of those summer days soon to be dormant. We still have some time, though, and we are holding some sunshine with this delightfully fresh cocktail Watermelon Limoncello Lemonade.

Watermelon Limoncello Lemonade, a glass of sunshine to remind us of the sunny, warm days, that are diminishing very rapidly by the cool north winds, reminding us that fall is approaching. The warmth of the nice golden yellow color and the brightness of the flavors of chilled limoncello, yellow watermelon from B.C. Canada, a dash of lemon juice and grated ginger, set the stage for last back yard BBQ’s or lounging on a beach watching waves flow in and fall out. The sun shining, thirsts high and a nice tall glass of this cocktail to quench the palate.

I have to say I am a beach bum, give me some sand, sunshine and a bit of sea or ocean and my true colors and inner child come out, especially with a nice wedge of watermelon in my hand and dripping from my chin. When I was younger winter was fun, tobogganing, skiing, spending endless nights in the snow playing sculpting forts, and making angels in the snow till I could not feel my fingers and toes. As I mature, (for sake of not saying getting older), it is becoming more difficult to accept and enjoy the fall and winter seasons. The temperatures are bone chilling, snow shoveling a back grueling feat. The lack of daylight accompanied by the fact that the back yard is no longer echoing with the sounds of the water falls flowing in the pond is missed. The lack of color other than the massive amounts of lights and decorations that celebrate the Christmas season is evident in that blank white canvas with haunting shadows of the spindles of branches, leafless, is daunting. Well I have the cure and there is a bit of summer left. With that being said, I am going to introduce to you a cocktail of pure sunshine hosting B.C. watermelon and Positano limoncello, that I think you will enjoy and will bring laughter, smiles, and that look of ahhhhhh this is the life!

The story behind the Watermelon Limoncello Lemonade.

Nicoletta and I had taken a trip to the Amalfi coast in Italy. A series of towns teeter on the mountain side overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Beautiful towns each with their specialty dishes and produce. One thing that is evident is these massive Goliath lemons that first captivate you with their size, then the aroma that wafts through these narrow inclining paths, intoxicate you, building a craving for something lemony. It was in Positano where we bought and brought back to our home in Canada, a bottle of this liquid gold Limoncello. And it was in Capri where we had the best and tangiest lemonade ever!

Watermelon Limoncello Lemonade

I had never tried limoncello before. We were at a restaurant in Positano. A beautiful place on the patio hanging over a cliff watching the moonlight reflect on the waters of this bay of the sea. We had a most delicious meal and the owners of the restaurant brought us a nice after dinner liquor, yes limoncello. Chilled to the point that the glass had some frost on it. My first sip went down and what I thought would give me brain freeze did the opposite. Warmth running down my throat into my belly absorbing into every cell of my body, and the smile that came across my face endless, and that memory lives on  in the drink that we have prepared for you today Watermelon Limoncello Lemonade.

At our usual trot to the farmers market downtown, we brought home one of those cute small watermelons. We left it to ripen a bit. The other day Nicoletta cut it open and expecting to see that rich crimson color was so so surprised to find it to be yellow. Not just any yellow, but a vibrant, bright rich yellow. The smell she said was amazing and she had a taste to find it was juicy sweet and very close in flavor to your usual watermelon. Nicoletta and I always wanted to do a post on some kind of cocktail or drink, and at that point I think we found the base for a wonderfully fresh and vibrant drink.

Watermelon Limoncello Lemonade

Nicoletta was looking through a  magazine, when she stumbled upon a wonderful watermelon cocktail. Having most of the ingredients and a bit of creativity we created our glass of summer sunshine. Some of the B.C. yellow watermelon, the last bit of the limoncello, some lemon juice and grated ginger, and into the blender it goes. Puree till smooth and into a pitcher in the fridge for a while. Some nice soda water or sparkling water is added just before serving,  in goes some ice, and a slice of lemon  lingering on the edge of the glass for looks.  The flavor fresh, sweet from the watermelon, that nice punch of citrus from the lemon juice. The ginger offering a bit of spice, and that backdrop of limoncello warming and lemony with a slight kick, all floating in those wonderful bubbles of some sparkling water. I love this cocktail so smooth and not too over the top. Slightly alcoholic, just perfect.

Imagine this, you hear the waves coming in sculpting the sand and going out crashing on some distant rocks. The sun is shining and you feel the rays caressing your skin. Your body relaxed as your stretched out on a lounge chair, no worries rushing on that busy street of the mind, and you open your eyes to the sound of the waiter saying, “Here’s the Watermelon Limoncello Lemonade that you ordered”.

Loreto, what a wonderful way to hang onto the last bits of summer! I, too, am a huge beach lover, so the sound of a day at the beach, replete with juicy slices of watermelon is simply amazing to me. 🙂 And YES, the winter can be quite harsh… it does sometimes feel like the lazy days of summer are too far away when you’re shoveling snow and freezing everywhere! I loved hearing about you and Nicoletta’s visit to the Amalfi coast. I’ve long dreamed about visiting there. 🙂 The sound of that amazing limoncello will linger in my mind for ages. 🙂 In the meantime, bravo for creating such a pretty and delicious drink! It’s like a glass of summer. I love it! Pinning, of course. Have a great week, you two!

Hi Kathy, this was so refreshing, and that jug did not last long. So true that it was fun to be surprised at the golden melon. I was not here when Nicoletta cut it open, but could just imagine the look on her face. The surprise was well welcomed and the color for the cocktail was perfect. Thank you for commenting.

Hi Mary, thank you for your comment. it is so true that we have a bit of sadness when summer ends, but as you said the festive winter season is approaching and there are so many great things with that. Well put. If you were close Nicoletta and I would have you over for a watermelon cocktail, sit outside in the gardens and just enjoy life.

I love all sorts of lemonade with fruits but have never tried limoncello. My husband and I are taking a trip to Italy in October, may be I should get one bottle too.

Hi Balvinder, if you get a chance bring one back, it is so refreshing and a perfect way to end a meal. If you are going to the Amalfi coast there is the place to get it. If not and you are in Rome try to get to an Italian superstore called Eataly. You will love this store. Thanks for the comment.

This is the greatest post Loreto! And that pic of you in Positano sipping on the limoncello is perfection! 😉 The best limoncello (and grappa for that matter) that I ever had was in Rome Italy. Every time I drink it now, I’m reminded of that beautiful city and how I just want to go back and live there for the rest of my life. We are having a holiday BBQ this weekend so going to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing 🙂
