It's late morning and we just had our second break

It's late morning and we just had our second breakfast 😉.
Well, somebody had to taste test the finished product 😊👌.
And as we are still in quarantine, it's pouring rain🌧 outside and it just happens to be Canada Day🇨🇦, why not celebrate with freshly baked sour cream biscuits, organic raspberries and a bowl of freshly whipped cream🤩😋.

There are dishes that touch me deep in my soul. Call it something deeper like past lives.

Do I believe in past lives? Yes I do, do I need to prove it ? No, I can only say what I experience deep inside me!
.
That being said I can only tell you that when I cook Indian food there is this energy inside me that just takes over, and the ability to combine spices and ingredients feels as natural as when I get behind my drum set and allow rhythms to flow!
.
Well last night made a pot of Dahl. Just adore what happens as the aromas intensify and flavors mingle so beautifully that produce colors that just warm the deepest parts of my soul. Oh Nicoletta and I also made some homemade naan grilled on the barbeque!😋👍
.
Nicoletta was very happy too. Dahl is not something that she would have had in Rome unless I was there, but the spice bug has infected her father's passion as he has been adding a fair bit of turmeric to his dishes!
.
This dish is the perfect food to ignite the joy in each and every one of us. Why not give it a try, and fill the house with exotic and beautiful aromas.

I cannot imagine anything more scrumptious than a tray filled with buttery, delicious palmiers to have at tea time or dessert.
.
I have always loved palmiers, or “ventaglietti” as we call them in Italian, since my childhood. You just cannot beat the sweet crunchy flaky buttery combination. .
I made these with my homemade puff pastry and served them to my parents in Italy. They were blown away by the texture and flavor. No store-bought palmiers can compare. .
So, in the end, all the work, time, and patience you need to make puff pastry was very worth it. The look on your loved ones as they bite into your creations and seeing them go back for seconds, or thirds, is what makes me want to bake in the first place 😊. .
If you feel like it, I have included pictures and a “how to make puff pastry”. Don’t want to sweat over homemade puff pastry (for now)? Store bought puff pastry works just fine, but make sure you get one made entirely from butter. 📍

Exactly one week since I've been back, I had forgotten how nice our Saturday nights could be.
Yes, we didn't go anywhere, and didn't have anybody over, since still obliged to quarantine.
But we treated ourselves to a wonderful supper. Loreto made pizza🍕on the bbq and he's so good at that. 😋 The crust was amazing, and the topping fresh and flavorful (scroll second picture to see).
We had dessert accompanied by watching our favorite Hallmark movie channel which we call the place of kissing movies🥰. Always guaranteed for us to shed a few joyful tears.😊
As for dessert, I used the last of the Saskatoon berries we had in the freezer and made a wonderful galette. The crust made with a combination of spelt, 00, and almond flours. Absolutely scrumptious.
Totally a Hallmark moment 😁❣

We were just blown away by the flavors of this bean salad. .
The dressing, a combination of honey, curry, sesame oil and cumin, and plenty of texture from the roasted cauliflower and beautiful chickpeas! .
All of this sits on a pool of spiced yogurt. Absolutely amazing!🤩

Am I having a hard time or getting bored during this forced quarantine?
Not really, by now I am used to be confined at home. I worked from home, in Rome, from March until June, plus, when I am here in Canada, I usually spend most of my days at home, working at the blog, hanging out with the cats😻, waiting for Loreto to come back home from work.

What's really different, though, is having Loreto around. It makes a hell of a difference!🥰
.
I am loving every minute of it, also considering that these will be our only vacation days. Too bad, eh? This year can really be considered the most unusual one, to say the least.🙄
.
Anyway, what do I do when I am "stuck" home? I bake👩‍🍳.
Here you have a "Sacher-inspired Babka", with chocolate and apricot jam.

Have you ever had the famous Austrian Sacher Torte? Together with Profiterole they are my absolute favorite cakes!!

I find the combination of the chocolate with the apricot jam to be absolutely divine, add to that a wonderful brioche dough and you have the most amazing dessert for breakfast.😋😋

We can't even share it with people...oh well...more for us! 😄

There are some dishes that bring back wonderful memories.

Today's dish did just that for me bringing back the aroma of onions sauteing in the pan as my father prepared one of his go to dishes Fagioli in Umido, Pan Steamed Beans.
.
Everytime I have this dish I am brought back in time to my father's cute arched brick kitchen with all the Italian knick knacks, dipping some good crusty rustic bread into the broth of this delicious simple absolutely amazing dish!

On our second day of quarantine since I came back

On our second day of quarantine since I came back to Canada, I made a strawberry rhubarb crisp with rhubarb from our plant, and strawberries 🍓🍓from @freshbcfruit .
I dressed the fruit simply with muscovado sugar, vanilla extract, and cornstarch, while for the crisp I combined rolled oats, almond flour, coconut shavings, maple syrup, and organic butter.
We had it for dessert with a dollop of lemon basil sorbet from @littlebeargelato a local producer, and the morning after, for breakfast, with plain Greek yogurt.

Feels good to be back 🏠💕.
