While my husband was going to a Farmers' Market in Edmonton on Saturday, I am going to an equivalent Mercato Contadino here in Rome on Sunday. We love our saturday routine when we're together. We usually start our morning going out for breakfast, then head to the Old Strathcona Market, rain or shine. So you can imagine how much I miss that, and how much I was happy when I found this Farmer's Market not too far from where I live. They only sell locally grown, organic and seasonal produce. Moreover, it is outside. And I like that very much.
Since it is still winter, for fruit they only sell apples, pears, kiwi, oranges, mandarins, lemons, grapefruits. I can't find any tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini or peppers that I usually like having in my fridge. And woe to ask :-). But there is plenty of broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, spinachs, rapini, radicchio, artichokes, chicory, mushrooms, potatoes, carrots, onions. Enough to make several healthy and tasty meals isn't it?
Other than fruit and vegetables I buy organic eggs (for my baking), every kind of dairy products: milk, mozzarella, cheese, butter, as well as bread and flour.
I go home happy with my recycled bags full of all sorts of local goodies. And next sunday I'm going to give myself a bunch of my favourite flowers, ranunculus :-).
I love baking and kneading dough because it takes me to a happy place in my soul.
