Macedonia, Italian fruit salad with sugar and lemon. You all know how much Italian cuisine is simple and relies on a few good quality, seasonal ingredients. The same is for Macedonia, the Italian fruit salad that is simply dressed with sugar and lemon juice and let macerate until ready to serve. A delightful end to a meal, instead of dessert.

  • 1 apple
  • 1 pear
  • 1 nectarine
  • 1/2 cup blueberries
  • 1/2 cup blackberries
  • optional: plums, grapes, kiwi, banana
  • 2-3 tablespoons cane sugar
  • the juice of 1/2 lemon to 1 lemon (optional, the zest)

  1. Gently wash the fruit and berries.
  2. Peel the apple, cut into quarters, peel, and cube. Add to a medium/large bowl.
  3. Peel the pear, cut into quarters, peel, cube, and add to the bowl.
  4. Cut the nectarine into slices, cut each slice into chunks and add to the bowl.
  5. Add the blueberries and blackberries.
  6. Sprinkle 2 tablespoon of cane sugar over the fruit.
  7. Drizzle the juice of half a lemon. Optional, add the grated zest.
  8. Gently mix the fruit. Cover the bowl and let rest for at least 15 minutes. The longer it sits the more flavorful it gets.
  9. Taste for sweetness and adjust with more sugar and/or lemon juice.
  10. Store in the fridge and serve at room temperature.

You can use the fruit you like ot whatever is in season.  If you use this combination, optional you can add plums, banana, grapes, or kiwi.

Also, instead of lemon, you can use orange or lime juice. Or, for a burst of flavor, you can add a drop of maraschino, limoncello, or other alcohol to taste.
